Ashby

I've been listening to Ashby quite a while now, only now I found the time to share their dreamy indie pop songs with you. Enjoy!
Ashby is a Scottish-American indie pop duo comprised of singer Evelyn Pope and producer collaborator Bill Cowie. Based in Boston the pair have recorded two albums both released on stylish German imprint Marina Records and both have garnered wide critical acclaim. First release in 2001, “Power Ballads” featured a strong range of pop songcraft with an atmospheric approach to production employing a wide range of acoustic and electronic instrumentation. A second album “Looks Like You’ve Already Won” followed in 2005, this time emphasising more use of acoustic instruments, woodwinds and horns and allowing for more collaborators. Guests included Blake Hazard of The Submarines. The London Times cited the album as one of it’s albums of the year.

Lindsey Ray

A friend of mine, Dieter, also a reader of this blog; recommended this girl to me.

At the tender age of five, Lindsey Ray declared to her family, "When I grow up, I'm going to be a singer." Focusing early on her singing, Lindsey grew up performing regularly in her hometown of Belfast, Lindsey began writing and composing her own original songs, a step she needed for her own satisfaction. She wrote one of her first songs, “A Song for Sam,” after the death of a friend in the fall of 2005. Finally, with nothing but a piano and herself, Lindsey was able to become the true artist she was always meant to be. Lindsey caught the eye of Original Signal Recordings when she uploaded a video for "Wake Me Up" Now in the process of writing and recording her first album, Lindsey strives to stay true to herself and to write real music that touches the soul. Her newest song "Goodbye From California," co-written with Justin Gray (Joss Stone, Emma Bunton), was recently featured in the season finale of MTV's The Real World: Hollywood.

The Mood

The Mood has been making quite a name for itself in New York City's music scene. This five-piece boasts infectious pop tunes infused with a sunny rock 'n' roll vibe that has audiences dancing far and wide. The effortless vocal harmonies of cousins Marco Argiro and Corinne Callen gracefully complement gritty guitars, grooving bass lines and pounding drums. The Mood has been receiving radio airplay in various college radio markets, and four tracks off its "Get In" EP were recently featured on MTV's The Real World. The band has had memorable performances at SXSW, CMJ, and shared the stage with artists such as Simian Mobile Disco, This Is Ivy League, and Tom Morello’s the Nightwatchman. The Mood's latest album was produced by the band itself and recorded and mixed at Edison Studios in New York City. The new tunes showcase an individual and collaborative musical evolution that fans at live shows have come to know and love. The new record "Synaesthesia" is due out July 1, 2008 on Outright Rock Records.

Jacob Golden

Jacob Golden is a result of listening to some last.fm radiostation....

Born in California in the early '70s and raised on pop radio and later hip-hop, Jacob Golden developed his appreciation for music through a variety of sources that culminated first with Jeff Buckley and then, through Buckley's version of "Lilac Wine," Nina Simone. "Nina is the master of expressing a sad song," says Golden, explaining that for him it's about "capturing the most emotional and real and genuine thing. Not about technically, was that a good vocal?" David Kosten (Faultline), the producer on Golden's debut EP, "Jacob Golden", influenced his search for the essence of the emotion, rather than a pristine sound.

Castledoor

A few days ago, I discovered this wonderful band, and immediately fell in love with their sound. Surprisingly they're not signed yet, because all songs on their debut EP are great!
Castledoor is an independent band based in Silverlake, California, formed in September 2004. The band consists of Nate Cole (lead vocals/acoustic guitar), Gabriel Combs (guitars/keys/vocals), Quinn Schwartzel (bass), Joel Plotnik (drums), Lisa Cole (keys/vocals), and Coury Jane Combs (vocals/synth) produce an unique organic, melodic genre of music. Originally, they were only releasing music through their MySpace and PureVolume profiles, however on July 25, 2006, they released their debut EP, "Follow the Dove" on CDbaby. Fortunately, Castledoor went into the studio in February 2007 and their next release, the "Till We Sink" 7" will be out July 29th.

Christa Couture

Another gem, discovered through MySpace.

Couture was born with music in her blood. Her mother sang in sixties folk trio and her father performed ceremonial music his whole life. Christa was writing songs before she could write the alphabet and spent her childhood in choirs and her teens performing and studying musical theatre. At 21, she left Edmonton for Vancouver where she picked up a guitar for the first time. In 2002 Couture released her EP "Starter" and moved to England to learn the trade of singing in smoky pubs. A year later, overflowing with inspiration, she returned to Canada to record again. She released her debut album "Fell Out of Oz", she confronts and contemplates surviving cancer, kissing boys, kissing girls and abortion. She spins heartache, fear and hope into a passionate, compelling tapestry of music and lyrics. "The Wedding Singer & The Undertaker" is Couture’s second full-length album, released May 20th, 2008.

Firekites

Firekites is a Newcastle emerged collective revolving around the acoustic musings of four main players…Tim Mcphee (The Instant), Rod Smith, Jane Tyrrell (The Herd) & Jason Tampake (Josh Pyke) and are the latest signing to Aussie label Spunk! Tucked away for the past two years, Firekites have been persistently self-recording their first musical offering – a debut LP, "The Bowery". Sonically rich & musically diverse, Firekites have drawn together disparate, sometimes juxtaposed, influences resulting in a record that covers some unexpected ground. Blurring the lines between lo-fi jazz, folk pop and subtle electronica. The release The Bowery was named after the first art-deco coffee-house of its kind in Newcastle and was an appropriate backdrop for the initial sessions. Ten self-recorded tracks take their place on the debut LP out now through Spunk!
